“For after this manner aforetime the holy women also who hoped in God adorned themselves.” 1 Peter "3":5
Unless I am mistaken, this is the only place in the Bible where a direct reference is made to “holy women,” though the term “holy men” is often used. It is a notable reference because it draws attention to what is of great price in the sight of God. Why should this adornment of a meek and quiet spirit (verse 4) be so valuable in God’s eyes? Surely because its loveliness is the beauty of Jesus.<br/><br/>It is unseemly for a woman to be beautifully dressed and yet to display an ugly temper. The apostle would not wish that any Christian woman should be carelessly or negligently dressed, but he rightly stresses that the greatest beauty of all is the beauty of character. What is more, it wears well, for it is incorruptible.
